How the Rainbow Fish Tank Size Calculator Works
The inch-per-gallon rule fails for rainbowfish twice over: it ignores the school (six 1.5-inch juveniles “fit” a 10-gallon by that rule) and it ignores length. The calculator uses school minimums and a length check instead:
- Species minimum for a school of six (eight for dwarf species): 20 gallons and 30 inches for the dwarf band (praecox, threadfin, forktail, Gertrude's), 40 gallons and 36 inches for the medium band (boesemani, turquoise, neon-blue, celebes), 55 gallons and 48 inches for the large band (Australian, splendid, parkinson's), 75 gallons for the red rainbowfish. Adult sizes follow the Melanotaenia genus account.
- Group size. Each fish beyond the base school adds 12% of the minimum. Ten boesemani need about 59 gallons; twelve dwarf neons about 30.
- A second species adds 70% of its own minimum, since two schools share swimming room but not bioload.
- Planting. A heavily planted tank adds 10% for lost swimming room.
- Length check. The result is rounded up to the next standard tank that also meets the longest species' minimum length; a tall tank never passes on volume alone.

Two Rainbow Fish Species in One Tank
Set the first species to the larger of the two and the second to the smaller; the calculator adds 70% of the second species' minimum and reports the length for the larger. Two rules it cannot enforce: each species needs its own school of six (eight for dwarfs) — a single of each is not a school — and Melanotaenia species hybridise when groups are too small, so keep the schools full.
