Temperature: The Most Critical Parameter
Temperature is non-negotiable for discus. At 82–88°F, their immune system functions optimally, their digestion runs at the right speed, and their behavior is normal. Below 78°F, discus become stressed, their immune response slows, and they become highly susceptible to ich, bacterial infections, and gill parasites.
Use a quality submersible heater with a thermostat — not an adjustable stick heater without feedback. For tanks over 55 gallons, use two heaters set to the same temperature. If one fails in winter, the second prevents a crash. Always verify temperature with a separate glass or digital thermometer; do not rely on heater dial markings alone.
pH and Water Chemistry
Wild discus from the Rio Negro and Amazon tributaries live in water that is extremely soft, very acidic (pH 4.5–6.0), and stained with tannins. Captive breeding over many generations has produced fish that are substantially more adaptable. Most commercially available discus thrive in pH 6.0–7.0, with many doing well near 7.0 in stable conditions.
Do not obsess over pH at the expense of stability. A discus kept at a stable pH of 6.8 is much healthier than one subjected to pH swings between 6.2 and 7.1. If your tap water comes out at 7.2–7.4, you can often keep captive-bred discus successfully without modification — test for hardness first, as the two parameters are related.
If your water is hard (above 8 dGH), consider a reverse osmosis (RO) system. Reconstitute RO water with a discus-specific remineralization product to add back the trace minerals fish need. This gives you full control over both pH and hardness, which is the most reliable approach for serious discus keeping.
Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate
Ammonia and nitrite must be zero. These parameters are non-negotiable. Even trace ammonia (0.25 ppm) causes gill irritation, immune suppression, and behavioral changes in discus within hours. A cycled tank maintained with adequate biological filtration should never show detectable ammonia or nitrite. If you see any reading above zero, do a large water change immediately and investigate the cause.
Nitrate is more forgiving than ammonia or nitrite, but discus are still sensitive to it at levels that other fish tolerate easily. Aim to keep nitrate below 10 ppm. Above 20 ppm causes chronic stress, increases susceptibility to hole-in-the-head disease (HITH), and suppresses appetite. The only reliable way to keep nitrate low is frequent, large water changes — not chemical filters or nitrate removers, which are supplements at best.
Oxygen and Surface Agitation
Warm water holds significantly less dissolved oxygen than cool water. At 84°F, water contains roughly 30% less dissolved oxygen than at 68°F. This matters because discus tanks run at the upper end of the tropical temperature range, where oxygen depletion can become a problem in dense setups.
Ensure your filter creates visible surface agitation. A sponge filter in addition to a canister filter provides both biological filtration capacity and useful surface movement. Avoid keeping a tight-fitting lid that blocks gas exchange, and monitor fish behavior — gasping at the surface is a clear sign of oxygen depletion.
