Named after the legendary 1920s boxer for its ferocious fighting ability, the Jack Dempsey is a striking medium-sized cichlid covered in iridescent blue-green and gold spots that glimmer under aquarium lighting. Despite their aggressive reputation, well-kept Jack Dempseys develop considerable personality and can be fascinating centerpiece fish in a suitably configured cichlid setup.
Natural Habitat
Wild Jack Dempseys inhabit sluggish, murky streams, lakes, and swamps of Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala โ often in heavily vegetated areas with mud or sandy substrates. Water conditions vary widely, explaining their adaptability in captivity.

Tank Setup
55 gallons minimum for a single Jack Dempsey; 75+ gallons for a pair or cichlid community setup. They are diggers โ use coarse sand or gravel and anchor all plants in pots. Provide caves and rockwork for territory definition. Strong filtration is essential โ they are messy fish and produce significant ammonia.
Diet
Carnivore-leaning omnivores. Feed large cichlid pellets as staple; supplement with frozen earthworms, feeder shrimp, krill, and bloodworms. Avoid live feeder fish (disease risk). Feed twice daily; remove uneaten food promptly.
Temperament & Tank Mates
Aggressive โ especially during breeding. Best kept with similarly sized, robust cichlids that can hold their own. Suitable companions in large tanks: convict cichlids, green terrors, firemouths, and large plecos. Never mix with small or peaceful community fish.
