The German Blue Ram is one of the most spectacularly colored freshwater fish in the world โ a jewel-box cichlid that packs extraordinary beauty into a 2โ3 inch body. Males display a kaleidoscope of electric blue spots on golden-yellow flanks, a vivid red patch on the abdomen, a black vertical bar through the eye, and a characteristic black-spotted dorsal fin. They are ideal for aquascaped community tanks โ peaceful, personable, and genuinely stunning centerpiece fish.
Natural Habitat
Wild rams inhabit the llanos (tropical savannas) of Venezuela and Colombia โ shallow, warm, slow-moving waterways with sandy substrates, scattered aquatic plants, and minimal current. Water is very warm (78โ85ยฐF), soft (below 5 dGH), and slightly acidic (pH 5.5โ6.5). These conditions must be replicated closely for rams to thrive.
Water Requirements
| Parameter | Ideal Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 78โ86ยฐF (26โ30ยฐC) | High warmth is critical โ below 76ยฐF suppresses immunity |
| pH | 5.5โ7.0 | Soft, slightly acidic preferred; breeding requires below 6.5 |
| Hardness (GH) | 1โ8 dGH | Very soft water; use RO if tap water is hard |
| Ammonia / Nitrite | 0 ppm | Extremely sensitive to nitrogen compounds |
| Nitrate | <10 ppm | Frequent water changes essential |
Tank Setup
A 20-gallon long tank is the practical minimum for a pair. Planted aquascapes suit rams perfectly: fine sand substrate, scattered flat stones and driftwood (rams spawn on flat surfaces), broad-leaved plants for territory definition, and areas of open sandy bottom for foraging. Subdued lighting enhances their coloration. Gentle filtration โ rams dislike current. Note: their high temperature requirement (78โ86ยฐF) restricts compatible tank mates.
Diet
Carnivore-leaning omnivores. Feed high-quality dwarf cichlid micro-pellets twice daily; supplement with frozen bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops 3โ4 times weekly. Live blackworms are excellent conditioning food for breeding. Avoid overfeeding โ uneaten food degrades water quality rapidly at their preferred high temperatures.
Breeding
Rams are open substrate spawners that form devoted monogamous pairs. They clean a flat stone, large leaf, or depression in the sand and deposit 100โ300 eggs. Both parents share guarding and fanning duties. Eggs hatch in 48โ60 hours; larvae become free-swimming in 4โ5 days. Both parents herd the fry together and defend them aggressively from tank mates. Feed fry baby brine shrimp nauplii from day 1 of free-swimming. First-time pairs frequently eat eggs โ this typically resolves after several spawning attempts.
Common Health Issues
- Hexamita / HITH โ pitting on head and lateral line; treat with metronidazole; improve water quality
- Internal parasites โ common in newly acquired fish; treat with metronidazole + praziquantel in food
- Ich โ white spots; raise temperature to 88ยฐF for 5โ7 days (rams tolerate this well)
- Bacterial infections โ secondary to stress or water quality failure
