The cherry barb is one of the most underrated community fish in the hobby. Males display a stunning, deep crimson-red coloration โ especially intense during courtship โ while females offer a subtler gold-brown with a dark lateral stripe. Unlike their notorious cousin the tiger barb, cherry barbs are gentle and peaceful, making them ideal for planted community tanks.
Natural Habitat
Wild cherry barbs inhabit shaded, slow-moving streams and tributaries in the Kelani and Nilwala river basins of southwest Sri Lanka. The water is cool to warm (72โ79ยฐF), soft, and slightly acidic, flowing through dense forest with dappled light. Heavy leaf litter on the streambed releases tannins, giving the water a faint amber tint.

Tank Setup
A 20-gallon long tank comfortably houses a group of 6โ8 cherry barbs. They are active, mid-water swimmers who appreciate dense planting along the back and sides with open swimming space in the center. Dark substrate and driftwood with java fern or anubias create a biotope-appropriate environment and make male coloration pop dramatically. Cherry barbs will not disturb fine-leaved plants โ they are ideal inhabitants for delicate aquascapes.
Diet
Omnivores that accept most aquarium foods readily. High-quality tropical micro-pellets or flakes as a staple; supplement with frozen daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and bloodworms 2โ3 times weekly. They graze lightly on algae and biofilm. Feed twice daily in small amounts.
Temperament & Tank Mates
Cherry barbs are genuinely peaceful โ one of the few barbs that can be trusted with long-finned fish like bettas and fancy guppies. Ideal companions include neon tetras, ember tetras, corydoras, rasboras, otocinclus, and small plecos. Keep in groups of 6 or more; isolated individuals become shy and stressed.
Breeding
Cherry barbs are egg scatterers that spawn readily in a planted tank. Males display intensely red coloration during courtship and chase females through vegetation. Eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants and hatch in 24โ48 hours. Adults do not typically pursue eggs aggressively, but a separate breeding tank with java moss ensures maximum fry survival. Feed fry infusoria, then baby brine shrimp from day 3.
Common Health Issues
- Ich โ white spots; treat with temperature increase to 82ยฐF and standard medication
- Fin rot โ ragged fins from bacterial infection; clean water plus antibacterial treatment
- Parasites โ internal wasting; treat with medicated food
