A few strands are not an emergency. Dense mats become a problem when they shade leaves or corals, trap debris, block circulation or entangle very small animals.

What Causes Hair Algae in an Aquarium?
Hair algae expands when available light and resources exceed what desired plants or the reef system can use. Freshwater triggers include plant stress, fluctuating CO₂, ammonia disturbance, organic buildup, slow filter flow, crowding and abrupt changes. Reef triggers include young-system surfaces, intense light, trapped detritus, nutrient input and inadequate export.
A single nitrate or phosphate test does not tell the whole story because actively growing algae may consume nutrients as they enter the water.
Hair Algae in a Planted Aquarium

Remove floating fragments before restarting circulation. Manual removal reduces biomass immediately, but rapid regrowth means the original trigger is still active.
Does Too Much Light Cause Hair Algae?
Excess intensity, a long photoperiod or direct sunlight can supply more energy than stressed plants or an immature reef can use. Reduce light to a level appropriate for the desired organisms and put it on a timer.
Six to eight hours is a manageable freshwater starting point. Swell recommends about eight hours for a reef with corals during control, but coral requirements vary; darkness is not harmless to photosynthetic livestock.
Hair Algae, CO₂ Stability and Plant Health
High-light planted aquariums need reliable carbon availability and circulation. Visible bubbles do not prove adequate CO₂ delivery. Check clogged diffusers, injection timing and distribution. Low-tech tanks should use plants suited to non-injected CO₂ and modest light.
Adding fertilizer cannot fix a carbon or light mismatch, while removing essential nutrients weakens plants. Hold the chosen system steady long enough for new leaves to demonstrate recovery.
Do Nitrate and Phosphate Cause Hair Algae?
Nutrients support algae, but high nitrate or phosphate alone does not explain every freshwater outbreak. Healthy plants also require these nutrients. Before reducing fertilizer, check plant deficiency, ammonia, organic waste, CO₂ and light stability.
In reef tanks, control excessive inputs through measured feeding, clean source water, detritus removal and appropriate export. Track trends; algae uptake may make the water reading look deceptively low.

Declining flow allows debris to settle and reduces delivery of oxygen, nutrients and CO₂. Inspect intakes, mechanical media, spray bars and dense layouts. Restore circulation without blasting fish, plants, coral tissue or sand.
Water changes export dissolved waste and siphoned debris. Perform them consistently with conditioned, temperature-matched water. Avoid a cycle of giant corrective changes followed by long neglect.
What Fish, Shrimp and Snails Eat Hair Algae?
Amano shrimp can graze tender freshwater filaments. Some mollies and Florida flagfish eat certain types, but results vary. In reef systems, compatible blennies, tangs, rabbitfish, hermit crabs, urchins or sea hares may help.
Never buy an animal as a disposable cleaning tool. Check adult size, water needs, group requirements, coral safety and its diet after the algae disappears. Large reef herbivores require large tanks, and sea hares may starve when food runs out.
Are Hair Algae Treatments and Algicides Safe?
Chemicals may damage algae but do not correct the cause. Dying algae releases waste and can reduce oxygen. Some treatments harm mosses, macroalgae, shrimp, snails, bacteria, plants or corals.
Use only products labeled for the aquarium and inhabitants, follow the label, increase observation and aeration, and remove dying material. Never combine treatments or improvise concentrated spot doses.
Will a Blackout or UV Sterilizer Kill Hair Algae?
A short blackout may weaken some freshwater hair algae, but it leaves the trigger unchanged and can stress plants. It is not a routine reef solution because corals and other organisms depend on light.
UV normally does not remove attached hair algae: the growth stays on plants, rock or substrate instead of passing through the unit. UV may help free-floating green water, which is a different problem.
How to Prevent Hair Algae From Coming Back
Keep lighting consistent, block direct sun, avoid overfeeding, remove decaying leaves, maintain filter flow and perform repeatable water changes. In planted tanks, stabilize CO₂ and fertilizer and prune overcrowding. In reef tanks, maintain source-water quality, export and circulation around rockwork.
Inspect plants, rocks and equipment from other systems, although total exclusion is unrealistic. Prevention means denying small introductions the conditions needed for explosive growth.
