The zebra danio is one of the hardiest, most active, and most beginner-friendly fish in the freshwater hobby. Its bold horizontal blue-and-silver striping, constant schooling energy, and extreme tolerance for variable water conditions make it a go-to first fish for new aquarists. In science it is equally famous โ Danio rerio is one of the most important model organisms in vertebrate genetics and developmental biology research worldwide.
Taxonomy
Danio rerio belongs to the family Cyprinidae (the carp family). The wild-type form has five blue horizontal stripes alternating with gold or silver. The GloFishยฎ Danio โ available in fluorescent red, green, orange, blue, and purple โ is a genetically modified version widely sold in the US, created by inserting fluorescent protein genes. Long-fin (veil-fin) varieties are produced through selective breeding.

Natural Habitat
Wild zebra danios inhabit shallow, fast-flowing streams, rice paddies, and ponds at the base of the Himalayan foothills โ from Pakistan east through India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. These environments experience dramatic seasonal variation in temperature (cool in winter, warm in the monsoon), explaining the danio's remarkably wide temperature tolerance of 60โ80ยฐF. They naturally school in large groups in open, sunlit water.
Tank Setup
A 10-gallon tank is the minimum for a school of 6; 20 gallons allows a proper school of 10โ15 and greatly improves the visual display. Zebra danios are active, fast, open-water swimmers โ prioritize tank length over height. They are surface-oriented and excellent jumpers: always use a tight-fitting lid. A strong current (from a HOB filter or powerhead) closely matches their natural riffle habitat and keeps them energetic.
Diet
Omnivores that accept virtually any food small enough to fit in their mouths. Quality tropical flakes or micro pellets as a staple; supplement with frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops for conditioning. They are fast, competitive feeders โ in mixed community tanks, ensure slower fish get their share.
Breeding
Zebra danios are among the easiest egg-scattering fish to breed. A conditioned pair placed in a bare-bottom breeding tank with marbles or a fine mesh bottom (to protect eggs from being eaten) will spawn within hours of being introduced. Females scatter hundreds of adhesive eggs; remove adults immediately after spawning. Eggs hatch in 48โ72 hours at 78ยฐF; feed fry infusoria followed by baby brine shrimp.
Common Health Issues
- Ich โ white spots; treat with raised temperature and medication (danios handle 86ยฐF well)
- Mycobacteriosis ("fish TB") โ wasting, curved spine, ulcers; incurable; infected fish must be humanely euthanized and tank disinfected
- Swim bladder disorder โ buoyancy problems from overfeeding or infection
- Velvet โ gold dust on skin; copper treatment in hospital tank
