The pygmy corydoras is the smallest member of one of the most beloved catfish genera in the aquarium hobby. At under an inch long, it brings everything that makes corydoras popular โ€” the busy, industrious foraging, the social schooling behavior, the gentle cleanup-crew role โ€” into a package compatible with nano tanks and the most delicate of tank mates. Uniquely among corydoras, pygmaeus also schools actively in open water mid-tank, making it visually interesting at every level of the aquarium.

Taxonomy & Classification

Pygmy corydoras belong to the family Callichthyidae โ€” the armored catfishes โ€” alongside the more familiar bronze corydoras and peppered corydoras. Natural Habitat

Pygmy corydoras are native to tributaries of the Rio Madeira in Brazil, including the Rio Aguapeรญ. They inhabit slow-moving, warm streams with sandy or muddy substrates, dense vegetation, and abundant leaf litter.

Tank Setup

A 10-gallon tank is the minimum for a group of 6 pygmy corydoras. Key setup considerations:
